Located on a remote island in Lake Onega, Kizhi Pogost is dominated by two 18th-century wooden churches and an octagonal clock tower, also made from wood and built in 1862.  These unusual constructions are bold and magnificent yet in harmony with the surrounding landscape.  More vulnerable to deterioration than masonry structures, they require constant care and Kishi Island has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  St. Petersburg would be our last stop.
